Blender unity coordinate system. My name is constantine i use blender for 9 years now to make models for games in unity and my problem is the coordinate system. So i m having a small problem with blender. All coordinate systems in blender are based on a grid consisting of three axes. So modelling applications like blender often use right handed coordinates and game development toolkits like unity often use left handed coordinates.

The y axis represents front to back movement. Renderman is left handed and opengl is right handed or at least early versions were it s fairly agnostic now. The x axis typically represents side to side movement. Coordinate differences blender uses right handed coordinate system whereas unity uses a left handed coordinate system see illustration below.

Blender refers to the coordinate system described above as the global coordinate system though it s not truly global as each scene has its own global coordinate system. In blender the z axis points upwards whilst in unity the y axis points upwards. My problem is that i want to easily be able to rotate bones on my character by using the lookat function. In unity y is up while in blender z is up.

I do realize this might be more of a blender than a unity question but i figured that this might be the right place to ask since people on the blender forum might not know the relation between blender unity coordinate system. Also rotations in blender are counter clockwise around the axis while they are clockwise in unity. The coordinate plan seems to be messed up y is forward z is up. But you already got that correctly.

Each global coordinate system has a fixed origin and a fixed orientation but we can view it from different angles by moving a virtual camera through the scene and or rotating the camera. Unity and blender use different coordinate systems.
